The former Atlantic City High School was often associated with the eastern terminus of Route 40. It stood one block from the Boardwalk and was a magnificent building.

The school opened in 1923. Notable alumni include:

  • James Avery (actor)
  • Rosiland Cash (actress)
  • Joe Cicero (baseball player)
  • Pete Hunter (football player)
  • Lou Roe (basketball player)
  • Jessica Savitch (reporter)
  • Norman Woodward (inventor of the bar code)

In 1967 a study determined that the building was inadequate and in 1994 a new school opened about a mile to the west. The 1923 building was sold to a development group and it was razed in 1999. A casino parking lot is on the site.

George R. Stewart did take several photographs from the roof of the school as part of his field work for U.S. 40.
