Madonna of the Trail

Madonna of the Trail - Illinois

138-198 East 4th St
Vandalia, IL 62471

The monument sits on the southeast corner of the Old State House, Vandalia, Illinois. Originally the monument stood at the south entrance of the former State House. For aesthetic reasons, the state moved the monument to its present location in 1939.

This monument was dedicated on October 26, 1928. The keynote speaker was Judge Harry S Truman, President of the National Old Trails Association.

The monument was rededicated on November 4, 1978.

The inscriptions read:

West Face: MADONNA OF THE TRAIL N.S.D.A.R. MEMORIAL TO THE PIONEER MOTHERS OF THE COVERED WAGON DAYS

South Face: THE CUMBERLAND ROAD BUILT BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, WAS AUTHORIZED BY CONGRESS AND APPROVED BY THOMAS JEFFERSON IN 1806. VANDALIA MARKS THE WESTERN TERMINUS.

East Face: THE NATIONAL OLD TRAILS ROAD

North Face: AT VANDALIA, ABRAHAM LINCOLN, MEMBER OF THE ILLINOIS LEGISLATURE FIRST FORMULATED THOSE BASIC HIGH PRINCIPLES OF FREEDOM AND JUSTICE WHICH GAVE THE SLAVES A LIBERATOR, THE UNION A SAVIOUR.
