Guidelines for Businesses

First, it is important to remember that this site is not intended to be a directory for every business along Route 40 (or one of its associated roads*). To keep things at a reasonable level, here are the guidelines I use when deciding whether to include a business on these pages. If a business meets any of these criteria, I'll do my best to include them:

  • Located directly Route 40 (or its associated roads). A business must be located physically on the roadway - not down the street or around the corner.
  • Located within 100 yards of Route 40 (or its associated roads). A business must be located physically on the roadway.
  • Must have been in business for at least 40 years. Businesses that provide me with vintage photographs or postcard images are most welcome!

In addition to the guidelines above, I do not, generally, include businesses that are part of a large national chain. There are exceptions to this "no chain" guideline, of course. Denny's is a great example. I will not, however, include national mega chains. If I do include a chain, the chain must provide me with information described in the Bulk Listing page.

If your business doesn't meet these criteria and you would like have a business that you would like listed here, please consult the Advertising page.

If in doubt, contact me. I'm a reasonable guy and with good rationale, I could be persuaded to include a non-conforming business here.

* Associated roads include:

  • Former alignments of Route 40. Former alignments include any decommissioned section of Route 40, former Routes 40N and 40S in Kansas and Colorado and the former Alternate Route 40 In Nevada and California.
  • Predecessor roads such as the National Road, National Old Trails Ocean to Ocean Highway, Lincoln Highway, Dayton Cutoff, Oregon Trail, Santa Fe Trail and California Trail. If a business is located on a predecessor road it must be located within 10 miles of a current or former alignment of Route 40. For example, a business located along the Dayton Cutoff would be included since it is within 10 miles of the current alignment of Route 40. A business on the Oregon Trail in Nebraska would not be included since it is not within that 10 mile zone.
