Wheeling Suspension Bridge

Virginia Street
Wheeling, WV 26003

When it opened in 1849 the Wheeling Suspension Bridge was the longest bridge in the world. It was designed by Charless Ellet and the main span measures 1,010 feet in length.

On May 17, 1854, the bridge's decking was destroyed in a windstorm. The bridge was rebuilt and reinforced to prevent similar damage.
