Route 40 Alignments - DelawareState Road, Delaware was the original eastern terminus of the 1926 alignment of Route 40. The following year, Route 40 was extended east to New Jersey. Between 1927-1929, Route 40 crossed the Delaware River using a ferry between Wilmington and Penns Grove, New Jersey. Route 40 followed the Dupont Highway between State Road and Wilmington. In 1929, the ferry service shifted to New Castle (which provided service to Pennsville, New Jersey). For this change, the highway followeed Frenchtown Road and Chestnut Street. In 1951, the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened and the highway was realigned to that new crossing.
