Smoky Hill Trailwww.smokyhilltrail.comThe Smoky Hill Trail began in 1859 and ran between Atchison, Kansas and Denver, Colorado. It parallels the Smoky Hill River. Following the Civil War, David Butterfield began a styage and freight line between the two cities along the trail. The route is also klnown as the Butterfield Overland Trail. Although it was a morew direct route to Denver than many others, it was the scene of many Indian attacks (the plains tribes said the new trail was an incursion across their lands). The route was 592 miles in length with stations spaced about 12 miles apart. Between Manhattan, Kansas and Denver, Colorado much of Route 40 follows or parallels the old Smiky Hill Trail.
