In 1983, Heat-Moon's Blue Highways became a classic, continuing in the tradition of Kerouac, Steinbeck and others in the search for one's self by searching for America. A gifted and meticulous writer, he spent the next few years studying and writing about Chase County, Kansas for PrairyErth. In 1995, Heat-Moon took to the road once again, so to speak for River Horse in which he chronicled a boat journey across America. He was the first person to traverse the continent by boat.

Although the highway has received brief mention in his books, Route 40 is an important highway to Heat-Moon. In 2008, Heat-Moon released Roads to Quoz, which, like Blue Highways, chronicled more of his roadside experiences.

He was born along Route 40 in Kansas City and continues to live a stone's throw from the highway in Columbia, Missouri.
