Neal Cassady was born February 8, 1926, in Salt Lake City and later he called Denver his home. In 1947 he met Jack Kerouac in New York and Kerouack documented their relationship and travels in the book On the Road (Neal Cassady is the Dean Moriarty character). Cassady was part of the writers and poets knows as The Beats.

In the 1960s, after parting ways with Kerouac, Cassady took to the road and was one of the central figures in The Merry Pranksters and was featured in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. On Fenruary 4, 1968, while in Mexico, Cassady collapsed and fell into a coma and died. His cause of death is assumed to be an overdose of barbituates.
