Thomas and Geraldine Valevale@geography.wisc.eduThomas Vale, raised in California (where, as a child, he discovered George Stewart's book U.S. 40), has been at the University of Wisconsin for almost a quarter of a century. He teaches, writes, and thinks about vegetation change, wilderness and parks, landscape meanings, and the American West. Geraldine Vale, a High School teacher in the Madison Public Schools (English), has contributed to professional journals both in English and landscape studies. Together, they have co-authored three books, including U.S. 40 Today, a sequel to George Stewart's 1953 book, U.S. 40. That book provides a look at the changes in landscape and culture along the highway over a 30 year period. They also co-authored Walking with Muir Across Yosemite, a book about John Muir's first summer in the Sierra.
