Eastern Terminus of Route 401926 to 1927Intersection of Pulaski and Dupont HighwaysNew Castle, DE 19720 This intersection, known as State Road, was Route 40's original eastern terminus. As with the western terminus, crossing a large body of water such as the Delaware River posed a problem to highway engineers. A year later, the highway would be routed through Wilmington to the north and the wide river would be crossed using ferry service between that city and Penns Grove on the New Jersey side. Purists should note that Route 40's original alignment has been decommissioned. Where the two highway originally met is about 600 feet southwest of the current intersection. The old roadbed of Route 40 that used to intersect DuPont Highway is now used as a parking lot for a used car dealership.
