Eastern Terminus of Route 40

Atlantic City, NJ 08401Despite the lack of signage (New Jersey does not mark highways' termini), this is the official staring (or ending point of Route 40. It has been this location ever since the highway expanded into New Jersey in 1927. For one short year, the eastern terminus had been at State Road, Delaware. Extending the highway into New Jersey took the highway one step closer to becoming a true transcontinental route.
