George Stewart U.S. 40 Photograph No. 13 - Ridge and Valley31101 National Pike NortheastLittle Orleans, MD 21766-1045 This view to the east from the summit of Town Hill remains one of my favorite roadise spots in Maryland. It is on the old alignment of Route 40. There is a B&B located in an old hotel that at one time was a summer resort. The mountain in the distance is Sideling Hill - which was a major obstacle for early road builders. Long switchbacks were the only way over the mountain in those days. More recently, contruction crews just sliced right through the moutain for the I-68 crossing. It is welcome relief for motorists in a hurry, a gift to geologists and an eyesore to the rest of us.
