New Castle, DE 19720

The first span of the Delaware Memorial Bridge opened on August 15, 1951, and provided the final roadway link of the transcontinental highway Route 40. Previously, motorists relied on ferry service to get across the Delaware River.

In 1968, a second twin span opened, doubling the traffic capacity of the crossing. At 3,650 feet in length, the Delaware Memorial Bridge is the world's longest twin suspension bridge. The total length of the bridge is 10,796 feet for the westbound span and 10,765 feet for the eastbound span.

On average, 80,000 vehicles use the bridge daily.
