Joseph Smith Memorial BuildingFormerly/Also Known As Hotel UtahSouth Temple and Main StreetsSalt Lake City, UT 84103 (801) 240-4383 This hotel opened on June 9, 1911, and was designed by Parkinson and Bergstrom. Even though the Mormon Church was one of the major stockholders in the hotel, there was a bar in the hotel. In fact, the hotel advertised itself as having the largest bar in the west. The bar was part of a financing agreement but when church leader Joseph Smith learned of the agreement he was very angry. Given the choice of abstinence from alcohol (the official church policy) or profits, Smith reluctantly agreed to profits. The hotel had over 650 guest rooms. The hotel closed in 1987 and the building was converted to a multi-purpose building for the Mormon Church.
