Joss House (site)Bridge StreetWinnemucca, NV At one time the Chinese population of Winnemucca was considerable. By the late 1800s, many of the former Chinese laborers from the construction of the transcontinental railroad had settled here and they constructed their first Joss House, a place of community and worship. This Joss House was constructed in 1902. In 1911, this Joss House was even visited by Chinese president Sun Yat-Sen. Unfortunately, the Chinese were driven out of Winnemucca and the Chinese population of Winnemucca approached nothing. The Joss House was demolished in the 1950s when it was deemed unsafe.
