Madonna of the Trail - Kansas1-57 West Main StreetCouncil Grove, KS 66846 This monument stands on the east bank of the Neosho River at Main Street (U.S. Route 56). The monument was dedicated on September 7, 1928. The inscriptions read: West Face: MADONNA OF THE TRAIL N.S.D.A.R. MEMORIAL TO THE PIONEER MOTHERS OF THE COVERED WAGON DAYS South Face: HERE, 'EAST MEETS WEST' WHEN THE 'OLD SANTA FE TRAIL' WAS ESTABLISHED AUGUST 10, 1825 AT A COUNCIL BETWEEN THE UNITED STATES COMMISSIONERS AND OSAGE INDIANS East Face: THE NATIONAL OLD TRAILS ROAD North Face: 1825-1866 TRAILSMEN 1847-FIRST WHITE SETTLER SETH HAYS. 1847-COUNCIL GROVE TRADING POST.
