About 20 communities along Route 40 declare themselves the Crossroads of America and Effingham is no different. New Castle (DE), Baltimore (MD), Hagerstown (MD), Cumberland (MD), Uniontown (PA), Cambridge (OH), Vandalia (OH), Indianapolis, (IN), Terre Haute (IN), St. Louis (MO), Columbia (MO), Kansas City (MO), Salina (KS), Limon (CO), Salt Lake City (UT) and a few others have at one time or another made the same claim of being at the most significant crossroads in the country.
Well, if Effingham can't honestly make the claim of being the crossroads, they can certainly make the claim of being the road cross. The First Baptist Church of Effingham erected a 198 foot tall cross at the so-called crossroads. Signpost to salvation or massive eyesore - I've heard the cross described both ways. Take your pick.
