Steve Canyon StatueMiner Street & Colorado BoulevardIdaho Springs, CO 80452 In 1947, Squirrel Gulch was renamed Steve Canyon after the comic strip hero. Three years later, a giant statue of Steve Canyon was erected. Amazingly, the statue project was entirely paid for by the U.S. Treasury. Go figure. Although local tourism folks will tell you the statue was commissioned and donated by cartoonist Milton Caniff, the truth is that the town had the statue made with the federal money. Caniff had nothing to do with this. And that's OK with me.
