Milk Jug Flag (site)

6752 Harding Highway
Mays Landing, NJ 08330

Along a quiet stretch of Route 40 give miles west of Mays Landing, New Jersey, there once existed a magnificent work of roadside art - a massive American flag made entirely from painted one gallon milk jugs - 1,040 to be exact. The work was created by Josephine Stapleton, who by the way, is lactose intolerant. The work began in 1974 was not inspired by patriotism, but rather a way to keep her kids from riding their bicycles across her yard.

In June of 2008, Stapleton moved from her Harding Highway house to a nearby apartment. A few months later, with the help of her granddaughter and her husband, the jug flag was dismantled. Stapleton said it took the three of them about 10 hours to take it apart.

There's no word whether anyone else will be resurrecting her work of art.
