The Union Pacific "Ellis House" was build in 1872 and used as a depot for a while. It was a very popular gathering place. Buffalo bill used it as a starting place for buffalo hunts.
George A. Custer spent much time there while stationed at Fort Hays. The Manager John Edwards Would have picnics on the lawn for the entire town at no cost. It was said the restaurant was the best eating place between Kansas City and Denver. The hotel was sold in 1935 for $400.00 to Charles Erbert and was later torn down. The end of a great era. |
